Sandomierz invites
A county town located on seven hills on the Vistula River at the junction of two geographical regions: the Kielce-Sandomierz Upland and the Sandomierz Basin, 85 km from Kielce and 15 km from Tarnobrzeg. Mentions of Sandomierz as a town date back to the 12th century in the records of Gall Anonim's Chronicle.
Formerly the seat of dukes (Henryk of Sandomierz, Bolesław the Curly, Leszek the White, Bolesław the Shy) and a royal residence (Casimir the Just). Its origins date back to the 10th century. It developed as an important settlement on the trade route to Kraków and Eastern Europe. It was repeatedly destroyed by Tatar raids, the Swedish Deluge, and Rakoczy's troops.
After the partitions of Poland, it became part of the Austrian monarchy, and after 1825 in the Kingdom of Poland as a border town. During the interwar period, it was the capital of the Central Industrial District. During World War II, it was an important center of the partisan movement, especially the “Jędrusie.” Today it is an important tourist center.
